Inspiration, in the mind of an artist, comes and goes. Writers carry notepads everywhere because inspiration can surprise them from a mundane occurrence during a normal day. As a crafter, finding inspiration is key – and something we are constantly looking for. It can be difficult not to copy other crafters’ ideas and maintain our own “voice” in our creations. The important thing, when looking at other crafters’ creations, is to be “inspired” but not replicate.
One way I find inspiration is by simply thinking of ways to improve everyday things I use. For example, my purse is constantly flying around the car whenever I take a turn. I thought, “I need something that will attach to the passenger seat that holds my purse in place.” This inspired an idea to sew up a pouch that I put my purse in when I get in my car. It holds the purse in place and, because I used a gorgeous fabric, adds some style to my car.
Another way of finding inspiration is adding your own touch to a common item. Obviously household items such as pillows and blankets can be made with your own style. There are so many other common items like: a bird house, wall art, refinished or painted furniture – or how about clothing? Try to picture what these things could be – or if you had made them, how would they look? What is your design style? I recently, when looking for new shoes for my daughter online, was inspired to have my daughters paint their own canvas shoes. They were excited to have a craft project and be able to put their own personal touch on their respective shoes.
And, of course, there is inspiration from nature. I find simply gazing at beautiful views can inspire some wonderful craft projects. Nature is my number one inspiration to create. In Michigan we only have a few months of hot weather (where I NEED to be outside), but there is great beauty in the Winter here as well. Sometimes we just need to stop looking for inspiration and inspiration will find us (I know – cliche, right?). It is true, however, that sometimes the thing you seek is the thing you can’t find.
